JPEG Image Format

JPEG, short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.

The format works by analyzing images in small blocks, and then using a discrete cosine transform (DCT) to transform these blocks into a frequency-domain representation. It then quantizes the frequency components in a way that reduces the precision of some of the less important information, which allows for substantial compression. The human visual system is less sensitive to small changes in color or brightness over a large area, so this loss of precision is usually imperceptible.

JPEG is widely used because it can compress images to a fraction of their original size, making them easier to store and transmit. However, the compression process does result in some loss of quality, particularly if the compression ratio is high. This makes JPEG less suitable for images that require high precision, such as medical imaging or technical drawings, where lossless compression methods like PNG or lossless JPEG are preferred.
